Altered Carbon

Netflix is doubling down hard with Altered Carbon. It’s a sci-fi through and through new series that is costing Netflix a king’s ransom in cash to make but looks like it could pay off. It follows an Envoy soldier (body-hoppingĀ merc soldier) who is brought back to life with tech that exists in this world for the rich and powerful to download their brains/soul into new bodies. His mission is to solve the murder of the man who brought him back to life. It’s a fully realized world in the vein of Blade Runner where we follow Takeshi Kovacs, played by Joel Kinnaman, on this task. Casting Joel, a stereotypical tall blonde hunky dude, in a grimy cyberpunk future world raises a red flag that some executive somewhere is making final decisions, but I’m keeping my hopes up. It’s not that he’s a good actor, just not who I see for the role. It hits Netflix on Feb. 2, so we won’t have to wait long to see for ourselves how it is.
