Black Diamond, who has been a household name in the climbing world for years, has recently announced they are getting into the climbing shoe game. They aren’t stepping one toe in with a single shoe either. They are getting things going with a line of four different shoes. They include the Momentum, Focus, Shadow and the Aspect. Each shoe is designed to cover one of the four general categories of climbing. It’s not the first time Black Diamond has worked with footwear. They distributed Scarpa up until over a decade ago and had ski boots, but these are the first time around with climbing shoes. I’m digging the first of the line to release later this October which is aimed at the gym (and bouldering) climber. It, like three of the four models, has a new Engineered Knit Technology material used on the upper where you can use some serious flexibility and air flow. The knit is tighter at the top and looser towards the toe box where your piggies can breathe. It’s fit with two Velcro straps and gives a surprisingly good fit.
The Momentum has a neutral flat last, custom created rubber, and will actually be available in men’s women’s and even kid’s versions. Men’s will be $89 but launch exclusively at REI.
